Manning such a large operation saw the number of Unique Pets staff increase rapidly and many of the original team stayed with Unique Pets for five years until the restructure earlier this year. Part of the reason for the low turnover is the investment in our people. All staff have been given substantial training in raw food, natural treatments and holistic health.
Micheala, who joined the week before the move to Chamberlain Road, is still with the company and has transformed from customer service into an experienced stock manager. Both Ellie and Hannah started on the shop floor before we paid for their training to become groomers. Hannah, Megan and May were all given the opportunity to move from customer service into the Pool for Paws when Unique Pets took over the fun pool in 2018. Hannah and Lacie were both given opportunities to help out in the training room. After a period of being overlooked, the original small shop in Winslow received a makeover in 2017 and with new staff the shop began to flourish and grow again.
Just six years after opening the doors in Winslow, Unique Pets won the Pet Industry Federation award for Independent Retailer of the Year in 2017! The awards recognise businesses that have attained outstanding achievements throughout the year. A spokeswoman for the federation said: “This year’s record number of entries were particularly high-calibre – particularly in the retailer, manufacturer and pet service sectors.” The award was a huge celebration of the team effort of people passionate about pets.
This period of our Unique story is summed up by our amazing staff, without whom none of our success could have been achieved. We have been blessed with very committed staff who go above and beyond for the company, often giving up holiday and days off to help out, not to mention the odd midnight run to save frozen food when the walk-in freezer failed in the height of summer!
