A lot of people underestimate how much work the small furries can be. For example did you know;
Rabbits have a very complex digestive system & can go downhill very quickly if not eating
Hamsters really like mealworms
Guinea pigs make squeaking noises when happy or sad
You shouldn’t feed Rabbits or Guinea pigs carrots
There’s a lot to learn about small furries and as all of the staff members at Unique Pets keep one kind or another from hamsters to ferrets we can always give you good advice. We’ve seen and had to deal with most things in our own pets!
We can help with feeding guides; help with runny tummies and behavioural problems.
Most important thing to remember with rabbits and guinea pigs is GOOD quality hay – this isn’t only necessary for healthy digestion but also to keep their teeth trim. All rodents grow their teeth continuously and they must be kept short by chewing.
We recommend nugget foods although some are fussy eaters.
Hamsters and rats need lots of attention, handling and mental stimulation – how bored would you be in a cage all day? There are simple things like ice cubes on a hot day and hanging things up for them to climb. It’s a good idea to put natural treats at the top so they get rewarded for their hard work!
Please always remember two males will ALWAYS fight (even siblings) so aim for two girls or a neutered boy and girl together. Neutering is important as it helps with mood swings (especially in girls) and can help reduce stress levels making them much calmer and easier to handle!
