Unique Pets is an independent pet store, passionate about individual tailored advice based on your pet’s specific needs
Jenna has always loved animals. Her passion started with a love of wild birds at a young age and she travelled far and wide to visit various bird reserves around the country with her dad. Bitten by the bug, Jenna got a Saturday job in a pet shop at the age of 13. Since then she has always seemed to have more pets than money – some things never change!
In 2010, when the opportunity arose to do an animal care course with Wildlife at St. Tiggywinkles, Jenna grabbed it with both hands and truly loved working with the foxes, badgers and other wildlife.
In November 2011, looking for a new challenge, Jenna decided to open her own ‘petshop with a difference’: Unique Pets was born. Two years after opening her first shop Jenna branched out to open a second store in Aylesbury, followed by local deliveries, her own brand of raw food Unique Raw, and a warehouse to store everything!
Sadly due to the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, the Aylesbury shop was forced to close, along with Unique Pets Grooming and the Pool for Paws. Still, Jenna and the team remained resilient, moving the business to an online shop for delivery and collection, while retaining the original shop in Winslow.
Just six years after opening the doors in Winslow, Unique Pets won the Pet Industry Federation award for Independent Retailer of the Year in 2017! The awards recognise businesses that have attained outstanding achievements throughout the year. A spokeswoman for the federation said: “This year’s record number of entries were particularly high-calibre – particularly in the retailer, manufacturer and pet service sectors.” Jenna said the award was a team effort of people passionate about pets.
Jenna has built up a strong team to manage a rapidly-growing business, so let’s meet the team.
Jenna’s love for animals began as a child and her first job was working in a pet shop aged 13. After pursuing a normal career, Jenna gave it all up to follow her passion and took on voluntary work with Tiggywinkles. Undertaking a number of courses on animal welfare and nutrition, Jenna decided to open a pet shop with a difference in 2011 and the rest is history. Her current family includes her two dogs, Gus and Joy, a rabbit, Nibbler, and many wild birds.
Owner & Trainer
Tom is Jenna’s partner and shares her love of animals, having always had pets in the family home. Despite initially not wanting a dog of his own, he soon changed his tune after Gus came along and Tom retrained as a dog behaviouirist in 2015. He joined Unique Pets on a full time basis, running his own classes and one-to-one sessions after the move to Chamberlain Road. With Jenna, he looks after their two dogs, Gus and Joy, a rabbit, Nibbler, and many wild birds.
Owner & Manager
Lucy grew up with cats, but it was her poorly rescue pup who introduced her to the world of raw feeding at Unique Pets in 2013 and she’s never looked back since. With an extensive career in writing and HR, she became a partner in the business in 2015 to support the expansion. In 2018 Lucy took over as manager for the Winslow branch, where she works with her two reactive rescue lurchers Rory and Darcey.
Lacie worked for Unique Pets when we first started, but left to have a family, and has now returned part-time in the warehouse. Her large family consists of two dogs, three cats and five children (in no particular order!).
Michaela is our longest-serving member of staff, joining just before the move to Chamberlain Road, and we think she now bleeds pink and green! She loves Disney and all small furries, but the pet she really wants is a snake.
Grace has been a customer of Unique Pets for many years. She became our full time driver during the covid-19 pandemic when the delivery service really took off. She has two gorgeous pets, Laya is a 4 year old tabby and Oakley is a 2 year old Bernese mountain dog.
Angela has 4 dogs (3 Alaskan Malamutes and an Alaskan Malamute x Husky) ranging in age from 18 months to 11 years. She and hubby Stuart take part in various canine activities including showing, backpacking and dryland mushing.
Lisa is married with two children, and has recently become a grandma for the first time. She had two rabbits for 11 years, but the replacement rabbit now lives with her daughter. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends.
